Pune: Re-register Your Vehicle Every 15 Years or Face Penalties

Vehicle Re-registration in Pune

In a significant move to curb pollution and ensure adherence to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has issued a reminder to vehicle owners regarding the mandatory re-registration of vehicles. According to the RTO, vehicles must be re-registered for a Vehicle Registration Certificate every 15 years, with subsequent renewals every five years to comply with pollution control measures. Despite these regulations, over one lakh vehicles, including two-wheelers and Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), are still pending re-registration in Pune.

The RTO has implemented an alert system that sends reminders to registered vehicle owners, prompting them to renew their registration or opt for the vehicle scrappage policy. However, a significant number of vehicle owners remain unaware of these requirements, risking hefty fines, compounding fees, and even the forfeiture of vehicle insurance benefits.

The lack of awareness is attributed to dissatisfaction with re-registration charges and a general lack of knowledge about the policy among vehicle owners. To address the backlog of unregistered vehicles, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways updated the re-registration fees in 2021, effective from 2022. Fees for two-wheelers have increased from Rs 300 to Rs 1000, and for LMVs from Rs 600 to Rs 5000, along with inspection charges and additional fees for postal and smart card services.

Failure to renew the registration can result in monthly fines payable through the Parivahan website, and traffic police may impose fines up to Rs 5000 for unregistered vehicle drivers. Vehicle owners are urged to complete the re-registration process by presenting the necessary documents for inspection at the Alandi Road office in Phulenagar, Yerwada, to avoid penalties and ensure road safety.
