Pune: APMC Takes Action Against Fake Konkan Alphonso Mango Sellers

Pune APMC Konkan Alphonso Mangoes

Pune’s Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) is intensifying its efforts to crack down on the sale of fake Konkan Alphonso mangoes, a recurring issue that has seen south Indian mangoes being passed off as the coveted variety. In recent years, APMC officials have caught at least three traders in the Market Yard selling these imitations. With mango season underway, the APMC has formed special squads to inspect all mango consignments arriving in Pune, aiming to safeguard consumers from fraud.

The deceit involves traders marketing cheaper mangoes from southern states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu as the premium Alphonso mangoes from the Konkan region’s Devgad and Ratnagiri areas. Such actions not only mislead consumers but also undervalue the genuine product, which commands a significantly higher price.

Dilip Kalbhor, the chairman of Pune APMC, emphasized the distinct qualities of the true Alphonso mango, including its taste, color, and size, which set it apart from other varieties. He highlighted the drastic price difference, with Konkan Alphonso mangoes selling for around ₹2,000 per dozen compared to ₹500 for the Karnataka variety, underscoring the financial motive behind this fraudulent activity.

Kalbhor also noted instances of traders attempting to deceive buyers by using packaging materials from the Konkan region, despite the contents being of inferior quality. The APMC’s response includes not only the seizure and auction of the fake goods but also the possibility of legal action against the perpetrators.

To combat this issue, APMC officials are not just focusing on enforcement but also on educating the public about the authenticity of Konkan Alphonso mangoes. They aim to prevent the sale of counterfeit mangoes and ensure that both traders and consumers are aware of the value and characteristics of the genuine product. Traders found violating these regulations could face severe consequences, including the filing of FIRs against them.
