Life Is Precious, Don’t Take It For Granted

We spend our entire lives waiting for our wishes to come true. The moment they are granted, we start yearning for more. Our wish-list seems to be never ending, like a tissue box, you pull out one and another pops out waiting to be pulled out!

In this captivating string of wishes, we often take many important things for granted. We think nothing of them and don’t even acknowledge their presence, but the moment they cease to exist or are temporarily inaccessible, we realize their importance. Here are 7 such bounties that we are endowed with and should never take for granted, because when we run out of them, life runs out of us.

Air – We take around 20,000 breaths per day, taking in about 11000 liters of air. Only during this pandemic did we realize what breathing means to life. To get a lungful of air, people are ready to give up anything. No one had thought people would suffocate to death due to shortage of breathable oxygen. We should be thankful to god for healthy lungs and plenty of air around us. Now take a deep breath (if you still can) and feel how satisfying it is, especially now, in the backdrop of coronavirus pandemic. Imagine if that satisfying feeling was taken away from you either due to extreme pollution or due to some kind of ailment, how devastating it would be to struggle for every single breath! So go ahead and take as many deep breaths as you want and be thankful for breath granted to you!!

Water – We feel thirsty and stretch out our hand to fetch a glass of water, gulp it down and forget about it. Just for a moment, stop and think, people have struggled to get just this glass of clean drinking water on many occasions. Natural calamities, man made disasters, getting stuck or lost, any of these situations can quickly make a glass of drinking water scarce. Drink that clean glass of drinking water and feel each drop of it going down your throat and feel fortunate about it.

Health – Good health is not noticed. You cringe only when something is not right, and when something is not right with your health, all you want is to regain good health. How easily we take good health for granted. Look at people who are ill or frequently fall ill. They would give anything to remain healthy. So if you are endowed with good health, cherish every moment of this healthy life while it lasts.

Freedom – Haven’t the lockdowns taught you enough about freedom? Before the pandemic, no one had ever thought that they would be confined to their homes and would not have the freedom to go anywhere they wanted at any time of the day or night. Now that freedom seems like a luxury that we parted with in the distant past. When you regain your lost freedom, cherish it for the rest of your life.

Time – All our lives we keep waiting. We are anxious to grow up, to start earning, to get this, to do that and so on. We set milestone after milestone for us to reach. The days remaining between today and the day of accomplishment seem to be so many and we can’t wait for them to get over, but those days are also the part of the total numbers of days that we were granted to live!! So live each day rather then anxiously wait for it to get over. Its never going to come back.

Reputation – It takes ages to build reputation but takes one misplaced moment to ruin it all. Take care of your reputation, and do not do anything that puts it at risk. People have taken their own lives due to loss of reputation. When you bask in the warm glory of reputation, little do you realize, how difficult it would be to live without it. Nurture it and protect it.

Parents – From the moment we are born, we take our parents’ love for granted. They do everything in their control to keep us well fed, safe, and happy. We sometimes use them as punching bags and even then, their hands rise only to bless us. Who else in the world would give you such unconditional love, that too without the expectation of any reciprocation? When they are gone, no matter how much you repent, they will only look at you lovingly from their garlanded pictures on the wall. There is nothing you can do anymore.

Only the very fortunate have their lives endowed with these supreme gifts. So go ahead and indulge in them as long as they exist, for you never know what the next moment holds. Every breath you take, every glass of water you drink, every moment of healthy and free life you live with good reputation, and every time you rest your head in your parents’ lap, be thankful, because many in this world are not as fortunate!!!
